The CapStage Academy is an opportunity for local and visiting theatre professionals to share their skills with the Sacramento community. All levels of experience and interest are welcome. Develop your skills and expand your performing arts network with Capital Stage professionals. 





Shakespeare For Actors with Matt K. Miller

A class for the actor seeking proficiency in delivering clear and compelling Shakespearean dialogue onstage. Through exploration of Shakespeare’s compositional elements, cultural context and acting techniques, students will develop a practical approach to effectively conveying the meaning and emotional content of the Bard’s language to a modern audience. A general familiarity with Shakespeare’s canon is preferable, but not necessary. Comfortable clothing is recommended, as is materials for taking notes. Participation is essential.

Matt K. Miller: For over thirty years Matt has made a living as a professional actor in every aspect of the art. His acting resume includes several TV shows, voice-over work, and various theatrical productions locally, across the country and internationally. Having been an acting coach and teacher for many years, Matt’s credentials include adjunct professor of Theatre Arts for the Los Rios Community College District; an instructor for the Arts Guild of the Rio Valley Charter School and past camp director for the Capital Stage Company and Sacramento Theatre Company’s theatre programs. He has also been a Master Teacher for the Sacramento Theatre Company’s Young Professionals Conservatory where he also served as director, playwright and artistic director. In addition, Matt offers one-on-one coaching for actors of all levels.

Chekov & Ibsen with Gail Dartez

Acting Chekhov & Ibsen: Creating a Character’s Inner Life

“I didn’t know what to do with my hands.”

With an approach adapted and honed over 30 years of practice, Gail Dartez will guide you through the texts of Ibsen and Chekhov to live truthfully under imagined circumstances and to create a sense of the characters’ inner lives resonating in every line and movement. Celebrate the radical idea of realism through work with scenes from the plays of Ibsen and Chekhov, the founders of modern drama.

Gail Dartez: Gail holds an MFA in Acting from the Yale School of Drama and is a proud member of Actors Equity Association. With more than 30 years experience as an actor, director, and theatre arts educator, Gail is currently an Adjunct Professor of Theatre at Cosumnes River College where she teaches acting. She has taught classes for Big Idea Theatre; worked as an instructor for California Musical Theatre workshops and camps; taught master classes for YPC at Sacramento Theatre Company. Gail is also an award winning teaching artist for the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission and offers private acting lessons/coaching.
